Methodology

The project arose from a desire to develop an integrated multidisciplinary approach to the use patterns that characterize cave use. Interdisciplinary research methods in the interface between archaeology, anthropology and history are therefore being used to explain the use of caves and rockshelters in the study area.

The project methodology includes:

  • Archaeological-topographic survey (Figures 4, 5 & 6)
  • Basic measurements in the caves
  • Collection of artifacts from the cave floors (Figure 7)
  • Recording of artefact distributions and preserved constructions in and around caves (e.g. fences, posts, drystone walls) (Figures 8 & 9)
  • Photographing and collection of GPS coordinates for all sites
  • Documentation of graffiti and engravings on cave walls (Figure 10)
  • Local history and archival research
  • Interviews with local cave users all over Pelion (Figures 11 & 12)
